The  mission is to serve South Carolina by promoting the safety, permanency, and well-being of children and vulnerable adults, helping individuals achieve stability and strengthening families.

DSS provides protective services for children and vulnerable adults, adoption, and foster care services.

It administers federal Title IV-B Child Welfare Services and Title IV-E Foster Care and Adoption Assistance program.

The Department is the administrator of the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children.

The Department also establishes standards for and licenses child care providers and residential group homes for children.

DSS programs:

Federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, which provides employment and training for people receiving cash assistance.

The Department administers food assistance programs in every county in South Carolina.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal benefit to assist low income people in the purchase of food.

Also, a commodities program distributes supplemental food through a network of food banks.

Other food programs provide financial assistance for child and adult care providers, homeless shelters and summer feeding sites for children.

The Department also administers the child support enforcement program under federal Title IV-D and other child support services, including fatherhood initiatives.

Yes, I have before to check on the status of my snap benefits and the lady was rude and said she could not look that up. Although, I've spoken with the director right after and she approved them. The attitude and morale of the front associates is really poor and unsympathetic I usually go to Dorchester because they treat us better. I called today because we are in urgent need of food, she explained it wasn't expedited but I always am. I went over my application and forgot to put the amount of rent that goes on every application. I am praying any day now I will get this a home position through Iqor any. just waiting for an email. In the meantime, this really needs to be expedited or I would ask.. she said the other problem was that i applied for TANF as well, I did so because I'm believing in faith I will get this job. Would deleting that App, for now, expedites my snap benefits. I used to work for eagle harbor boys ranch and had met one of the head ladies when I was picking up a resource packet for a new salvation army employee and she was so pleasant and called me back immediately and was able to deposit the amount due. I was wondering if I could speak with her because this is vital. Even with TANF but food first. Or if you can have the director call me, please. I would like to make an appointment with someone who can help so I can bring in any and all info needed and these things to be approved so I can provide for my son and we won't have to stress so much.
